About this harmonica course

If you are new to Sonny Terry please start with ‘Sonny Terry Blues Riffs Book 2’

In our first book of riffs devoted entirely to one harmonica star, harp players can learn to play traditional blues riffs like the great Sonny Terry with our easy-to-follow harmonica lessons. Ben explains more in our video:

Sonny Terry has been and continues to be a huge influence on generations of harp players – these Sonny-style riffs will introduce the developing harmonica player to the sound of the great man himself.

There are 60 riffs in the collection and you’ll need four keys for them – A, G, Bb and C. The riffs are performed at three different speeds and the notations and tabs give as much helpful information as possible. We end with four play along tracks, one in each of the harmonica keys, for you to try out the riffs.

On a special bonus track, the great Joe Filisko has kindly given us permission to include ‘Good Friend’, which is dedicated to Sonny Terry.

All our harmonica lessons can be downloaded as audio and PDF packs, stand alone PDFs, or ordered as CD and book.

    Compiled by Ben…

What I like a lot is the train chugging and I’ve also been listening to Sonny Terry and find his style of playing fantastic. So I was so pleasantly surprised to find out that you’ve made two books of his style of playing. But I’m wondering is it going to be too difficult for me, making me feel even more stuck. Slowly I’m getting down the short lessons on Sonny Terry style playing that you have on YouTube. Making the sounds is usually not the problem for me. More of a problem is speeding up, when I speed up I mess it all up. It would just be so cool if I could learn some Sonny Terry style playing with a bit of whooping included!

Of course it is impossible for you to know how good/bad I’m at playing without hearing. But do you think the Sonny Terry book would be too much of a challenge for somebody feeling a bit stuck? Are all the 60 riffs available for download? So I can actually listen to them and at the same time look at the tabs. Because for me only tabs doesn’t say enough,  I also need to hear the actual music to learn.

Thank you for your answers and all the great videos you’ve posted onto YouTube!

    Best regards,
    Joakim Nyberg

    Hi Ben,

Just wanted to say thanks for your Sonny Terry workshop at the NHL event on Saturday. I hadn’t really understood how Sonny Terry licks could be combined before and the workshop really opened my eyes, or ears. Had a great time and found it very informative and helpful. Thanks,

Jon

    Hello Ben
A big thanks for your new playalong on Sonny Terry. Great job.
Sorry my english is not very good…

Sonny Terry was without question, one of the most well known of all blues harmonica players. Sonny’s stinging and popping sound, acrobatic use of hands, rhythmic groove and pyrotechnic display of whooping, made him in my opinion, the most unforgettable of ALL harmonica players! Knowing the effect it had on a live audience leaves little doubt as to why he was in demand his whole life and why almost everyone will remember his name before Brownie’s. If understanding and experiencing some of this magic is of interest to you, then there is great news! Ben has taken numerous essential Sonny Terry licks and broken them down at three different speeds for you to access and learn as simply and painlessly as possible.
If you follow him, Ben will put you on the fast track to the summit of the musical mountain of Sonny Terry. This is indeed a journey that all harmonica players should experience.

Yes great stuff! Ben has dug deep into Terry’s sound.
I myself, am a huge Sonny Terry fan and played with
the guy. Sonny had a style that was truly his own,
Ben has done something here that Sonny would be

Le style de Sonny Terry y est parfaitement décortiqué(avec les fameux petits cris intégrés aux phrasés), vraiment top!

Je vous le recommande !

ça me donne quelques idées à intégrer aux futurs stages ! Génial ! En plus, les plans joués sont de différents niveaux et dans différentes tonalités d’harmos…

Bravo Ben et Merci !!!

Some time ago I had ordered and received the first Sonny Terry instructional book from you folks (hard copy).   I love it.  It is well done, be proud gentleman.  I am now interested in the next two in the series.  Are they available in hard copy?  If so I would like to order these as well.   I have found that your material is laid out very well and the 3 levels of speed is fantastic.

This is Volume 18 from Ben Hewlett and Paul Lennon is available now as a download from HarmonicaWorld.net and physical cd/book format as well. There is a video explaining all on http://www.youtube.com/paullennonuk. It will get you sounding just like Sonny Terry – maybe!

I can only connect my speakers. A super book for entry into the playing style of Sonny Terry. The different speeds of licks to understand exactly what is a well-played. However, it is a pure Lickbuch suitable for beginners and therefore limited, because some techniques are already being provided. Tom Ball’s book is a very good extension of Marterie, the licks are there, but in my opinion, a little more difficult and Raushören of licks in the normal game speed is a challenge in itself. All in all, ben Hewlett’s book is recommendable for Sonny fans.

    German to English translation
Sorry I’m late but I have the books and mp3’s since the beginning of October.

Conclusion: Get it yesterday … Bubba like now!

It is very good. It has also Whooping. Tom can not do that. It is very, very good for Sonny Terry fans. You should buy this before toms. Tom’s is a supplement (is that right?) For Ben’s book abwohl Tom’s been long on the market. Tom’s is more for intermediate to advanced players. That’s what I mean. Both are a must for Sonny Terry style. Both are “all meat and no filler” – great stuff!

Recommended by Tom Ball, Joe Filisko, Paul Lamb and Pat Missin you can believe me, “the pros” as well.

    Hi dear Paul and Ben,

Thanks a lot for your help.  The link did work.
I could not wait and made a print out of the book in a printing shop this afternoon.  I enjoy the music and they do help me learning more Sonny’s Stuffs.
I am a big friend of Sonny.  I have quite a big collection of his recordings.  I love the books from Kent Cooper and also Tom Ball’s but your book gives me more information and inspirations in learning and understanding Sonny’s tunes.
Will let you know more when I have time to go through the whole book once or twice.  Thanks again! I am also thinking to order the other 101 blues riffs book.

    Regards,
    Terence

    Hey,
Just wanted to say how great your sonny terry book is, really enjoying working through it.
And was wondering if you’ve ever considered tearing apart deford baileys songs?
I’d love some instruction on his style of playing.
    Cheers again, Damon.

Hello Ben, I just downloaded this and it is great – a must for those who want to learn Sonny Terry style. I just spent a week with Tom Ball in Klingenthal, Germany and the workshop was fantastic.
